{"id":4790,"date":"2020-02-05T19:35:51","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T19:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paymentfacilitator.com\/?p=4790"},"modified":"2021-06-15T16:38:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T16:38:55","slug":"report-mastercard-ceo-slams-national-payment-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/infinicept.com\/payment-facilitator\/archive\/report-mastercard-ceo-slams-national-payment-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Mastercard CEO Slams National Payment Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Mastercard\u2019s CEO, Ajay Banga, recently offered a blunt assessment about governments creating or supporting their own national payments systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In an&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/16bec8aa-42e8-11ea-a43a-c4b328d9061c\"><strong>interview<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;with Financial Times that was published on Sunday, Banga criticized the efforts of some countries to prioritize national payments control over global networks such as Mastercard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe economic cost of building siloed systems in a world where citizens travel globally is really stupid, and where crime travels globally is even more stupid, and where technology is completely global is even three times more stupid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banga told the publication that localizing payments networks has three issues: it requires significant investment in redundant systems, it makes cross-border transactions more difficult, and it fragments data, making it more difficult to use for tracking crime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Banga, the problem is worse in times of rising nationalism, but countries including France and Mexico have tried building national payments systems in the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis idea of finding a way to have national control on certain kinds of payments is not new \u2014 it\u2019s a fantasy that\u2019s been going on for a long time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, India, which boasts a rapidly growing digital payments market, has been aggressively supporting its own homegrown payments methods,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/paymentfacilitator.in\/business\/indias-upi-payment-method-hits-1-billion-pf-paytm-helps-support-growth\/\">including UPI<\/a>&nbsp;(Universal Payment Interface).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/paymentfacilitator.in\/risk-compliance\/observers-warn-of-unintended-consequences-as-indias-data-localization-deadline-nears\/\">frustrated<\/a>&nbsp;many foreign companies in 2018 by mandating that all payments data be stored locally, citing data security concerns. U.S.-based companies, including Mastercard, unsuccessfully lobbied&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/paymentfacilitator.in\/risk-compliance\/compliance-incomplete-as-deadline-passes-on-india-data-localization-rule\/\">against the rule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domestic payment facilitators have the potential to help bridge the gap between global networks and countries\u2019 desires to keep both business and data local.
