Leading payments platform and payment facilitator <\/strong>Shopify<\/strong><\/a> announced this week that\nit is launching its \u201creimagined\u201d point-of-sale system and offering it free to\nmerchants through the end of October.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company highlighted new features built for today\u2019s\nretail environment, \u201cbringing in-person and online sales together in one\nplace,\u201d it said in a press\nrelease<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company highlighted the importance of omnichannel\nofferings and the ability to stay flexible as key elements of its new offering.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Retailers need help right now. Shopify is doing\neverything we can to help retailers adapt to current challenges and come back\nstronger. We are releasing our new Shopify POS to give retailers \u2014 especially\nsmall, local businesses \u2014 every possible advantage,\u201d said Ian Black, director\nof retail at Shopify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRetailers deserve a point-of-sale that helps them shift\ntheir sales from in-store to online, easily offer curbside pick-up and local\ndelivery, and be ready for growth when in-store customers start to return. No\nother point-of-sale is as powerful for the challenges retailers face today.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new POS system integrates online and offline sales and\nincludes options to enable customers to order their purchases online and pick\nthem up in-store or at curbside. Merchants on the Shopify platform experienced\na ten-fold increase in sales when offering local pickup or delivery options\nover a two-week period in March, the company said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system also includes the ability to manage inventory\nacross channels and to serve customers anywhere with a mobile checkout option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its latest quarterly earnings release<\/a>,\nShopify pointed out some of the patterns that it has seen on its platform due\nto COVID-19 and discussed the impacts of those trends on its own business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that shops on its platform are seeing more customers\nlocal to their areas. In English-speaking markets during the six-week period\nfollowing March 13, the company said that the number of shops on its platform\nwith at least one local customer had increased, and local orders had more than\ndoubled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also pointed out that the number of new stores on its\nplatform had grown 62% during the period between March 13 and April 24, when\ncompared to the previous six-week period, as more brick-and-mortar retailers\nshift to selling online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile this increase includes both first-time entrepreneurs\nas well as established sellers, it is unclear how many in this cohort will\nsustainably generate sales, which is the primary determinant of merchant\nlongevity on our platform,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now more than ever, Shopify needs to be there for our\nmerchants, so our focus during these challenging times is to help solve their\nimmediate pain points,” Amy Shapero, Shopify\u2019s CFO, said in the\nannouncement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are well positioned to help our merchants,\nparticularly given the accelerated shift to online commerce. Our strong balance\nsheet provides us with the flexibility to continue investing in the right\nmerchant-first initiatives, supporting our merchants\u2019 success now and well into\nthe future.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
