Shopify Betting on QR Codes
Leading payment facilitator and e-commerce provider Shopify is betting that QR codes are coming back in a big way, to connect offline and online shopping more easily.
The company this week launched a new app, called Shopcodes, which will allow its sellers to generate unique, trackable QR codes for use in their marketing materials.
Shopify sellers can download the Shopcodes app for free from Shopify’s App Store, the company said in a blog post. The app enables them to link the code to a page of their choice – a product page or the shopping cart. They can also add discounts to the codes.
Once the seller has created the code, they can download a graphic file for use on signage, product packaging or other materials. A consumer can then scan the code on their mobile device to be taken directly to the seller’s store.
The fact that Apple is introducing native QR scanning support for the cameras on its devices in iOS 11 will make the ability to read the codes more widespread.
“With the #iOS11 update, #QRcodes are set to make a comeback and change shopping,” Shopify tweeted on Tuesday.
